King Black Dragon Hunting In Runescape

Introduction:
The King Black Dragon (or KBD for short) was once the strongest monster in all of RuneScape. It was by far the most difficult and challenging monster in RuneScape before the addition of the Kalphite Queen and TzTok-Jad. Players found him challenging because of the fight and finding the dragon itself. The King Black Dragon is no longer popular and very few people/clans make the journey to fight this being. The mighty Dragon is a powerful level 276. Please note that to reach the Dragon, you must go through high level wilderness and is only available to RuneScape members.

King Black Dragon
Requirements:
You need to be a RuneScape Member, and it is suggested to be at least Level 70 for a group battle, and at least Level 95 to go solo.
Preparation/Equipment:
Key Items:
Here are two VERY important key items you will need to try and slay the dragon with:

Anti-Dragon Fire Shield:

An Anti-Dragon-Fire Shield is required mainly for Melee players attempting to slay the mighty Dragon. You may obtain one of these shield's from the Duke of Lumbridge during the Dragon Slayer Quest. If you have misplaced your shield, you can always ask the Duke for another one.

Anti-Fire Shield
Defense Bonus: Stab +7, Slash +9, Crush +8, Magic +2, Range +8.
Anti-Fire Potion:

An Anti-Fire Potion is required mainly for Range and Mage players attempting to slay the dragon. Melee players may choose to use this technique if they are willing to bring a shield other than the Anti-Dragon Fire Shield. To obtain this potion, you can make it by combining Lantadyme and ground blue dragon scale using the Herblore skill (level 69 needed). If you don't have level 69 herblore, you can buy one from players, the price varies from 5K to 6K. Once the anti-fire potion has worn off, a sound will play, so make sure you have your headsets/speakers on. For those of you without headsets/speakers, it is not advised to bring anti-fire potions, instead, use an Anti-dragonfire shield.

Anti-Fire Potion
Provides short duration protection from dragon breath.
To kill the KBD you will need the right equipment, otherwise fighting him will end in death after a few hits, if that many.

NOTE: Equipment with the * symbol next to them indicates that it is a risk to take that item.
Equipment:
Melee Category:

Small Group Equipment:
  • Armor - Rune or better, with an anti-dragon fire shield (Must). Fremennik helmets are great too. Dragon Hide armor could be useful as the Dragon uses magic based melee attacks.
  • Weapon - You will want to use your best overall weapon here. Whips* and Dragon scimitar are the best way to go.
  • Jewelry - Amulet of Glory is the best amulet to wear. Any ring may be worn, but wealth and combat rings are the best choice.
  • Gloves - Any Family Crest gauntlets or the best gloves you have earned from Recipe for Disaster are recommended.
  • Capes - Legend, Obsidian, Skillcape*, Skillcape (t)* or Fire capes* are the way to go as they give quite handy defense bonuses.
  • Food and Potions - Good food is important, as it determines how many times you will kill the King Black Dragon. Lobster or higher is recommended. Anti-poison potions or Super Anti-Poison potions are the only potions required to kill the dragon. It is very likely you will be poisoned upon entering the lair, and the KBD himself can poison you, his poison can hit up to 8! Other potions, such as strength, attack, prayer, etc. are optional, but use up your inventory space, so you do not want to take too many of them.
Solo Equipment:
  • Armor - Since you will be using protect from melee, Proselyte or Veracs* (no flail) are recommended. You want the best possible prayer bonus. An Anti Dragon-Fire Shield is a must. Dragon Hide armor could be useful as the Dragon uses magic based melee attacks.
  • Weapon - Whip* is highly recommended, with a Dragon Dagger (p++) in inventory for special attacks.
  • Jewelry - Same as small groups, a Glory Amulet is the typical amulet to use, and ring of wealth or combat rings work well, Fury* amulets work well too.
  • Food and Potions - You will need less food for soloing, since you will be relying on other means of protection to stay alive. About 8 sharks is all you will need for a short solo trip. Antifire potions are highly recommended for solo trips, as the KBD can do up to 15 damage with fire even with antifire shield on. This, combined with the shield, lowers his max to around 5. Stat boosting potions like Super attack and strength are recommended, so you can do more damage faster. But do not bring too many or it will shorten your stay rather than lengthen it. Only one of each is recommended. Prayer potions or super stat restores will be key in this fight. Any inventory space not used by food, Dragon Dagger (p++) or other potions should be filled with these.
Range Category:

Small Group Equipment:
  • Armor - Full Black Dragonhide or full Karils* no weapon. A Robin Hood Hat*, or an Archer Helm if you can not afford Robin for the helmet slot, and if you are using a 1 hand weapon, an Anti-Dragon Fire Shield is Required.
  • Weapon - Crystal Bow*, rune crossbow with mithril bolts or higher, rune knives, Magic shortbow with mithril arrows or higher, or Karils crossbow*. Rune knives are highly recommended. Also, if you use a 2h bow (not recommended) an antifire potion is REQUIRED.
  • Jewelry - Amulet of Glory or Amulet of Fury*. Any ring may be worn, but wealth rings are the best way to go.
  • Gloves - Black Dragonhide Vambraces or the "Barrows" gloves from Recipe for Disaster.
  • Capes - Legend, Obsidian, Skillcape*, Skillcape (t)* or Fire capes* are the way to go as they give quite handy defence bonuses.
  • Boots - Ranging Boots* give the best range bonus. Climbing Boots and Rune Boots* will work if you do not have Ranger Boots. Boots of Lightness are fine too.
  • Food and Potions - Good food is important, as it determines how many times you will kill the King Black Dragon. Lobster or higher is recommended. If you are ranging the king with a magic shortbow or crossbow*, anti-fire potions are required, about 10 will be enough for most trips. A sound will play once your anti-fire potion has run off, so it is advised to turn on your speakers/headsets.
Solo Equipment:
  • Armor - Full Black Dragonhide or full Karils* no weapon. A Robin Hood Hat*, or an Archer Helm if you can not afford (or if you simply don't want to risk loosing it) a Robin for the helmet slot.
  • Weapon - Rune Crossbow (recommended), Magic shortbow, Crystal Bow* or Karils crossbow*.
  • Jewelry - Amulet of Glory or an amulet of Fury*, these give the best stat boosts.
  • Gloves - Black Dragonhide Vambraces for range bonus or Barrows Gloves for defence bonus.
  • Capes - Legend, Obsidian, Skillcape*, Skillcape (t)* or Fire capes* are the way to go.
  • Boots - Ranging Boots*.
Mage Category:
  • Armor - Mystic or Splitbark with a farseer helm and an anti-dragonfire shield.
  • Weapon - Any staff depending on what spell you will use.
  • Jewelry - Amulet of Glory or Amulet of Fury*. Ring of Wealth and Farseer Rings* help too.
  • Gloves - Use mystic gloves for a magic boost or use Barrow gloves for a defence bonus.
  • Capes - God, Legend, Obsidian, Skillcape*, Skillcape (t)* or Fire* capes are good.
  • Food and Potions - Very good food is recommended, Lobster and above is alright. Bring prayer potions as you will be taking magic damage instead of melee from the dragon.
Routes/How to get to the lair:
  1. Here is a map showing the safe but long route from Edgeville. You can also use the fastest route, the Canoe Route using the Wakka Canoe. (Axe of any kind needed and level 57 woodcutting needed) Be sure to watch out for the Green Dragons.

    Route 1

  2. Here is a map showing the second quickest route to the lair, although it is more dangerous, using the East Ardougne-Wilderness teleportation lever. Be careful here as this is a pker hotspot and watch out for the Chaos Element as well!

    Route 2

  3. You can teleport to high level wilderness using Ancient Magick Spells, for more detail, please refer to the Magic Skill guide and the Desert Treasure quest guide.

    Route 3

  4. You can cast the Trollheim Teleport (Requires 61 Magic, 2 Fire runes, 2 Law and must have completed Eadgar's Ruse quest) and head east towards the wilderness. You'll need at least level 64 agility (or level 60 with an agility potion) to go this route, climb down the mountain towards the wilderness. This will land you just near the graveyard. Then you can go north then east to the Dragons lair or east then north. Note that this is only a one way route.

    Route 4

  5. There is also the possibility of going through the wilderness in an empty Free to Play world, and then switching to a members world, this way, you can evade member PKers.

Before you can enter the lair, you must face 2 obstacles, pass through the Lesser Demon Cage and go down the ladder and pass the Poison Spider den and pull the Teleportation Lever. The Lesser Demon (level 82) Cage:

Lesser Demon Cage

The Poison Spider (level 67) Dungeon:

Poison Spider Dungeon
The Lair:
To get into the KBD's lair, you must first walk into the wilderness and then walk to the left of the Lava Maze, to the Lesser Demon cage. Once there, go down the ladder and you will be in a room filled with poisonous spiders. The spiders here can poison you, so be careful if you have decided not to bring an anti-poison pot, If you have, this part is no big deal. Quickly run to the nearby lever and pull it. You will now be teleported to the lair (the lair is not located in the wilderness).

The Lair
The Battle:
Here are some statistics about the KBD, before you hunt him down: Maximum damage with melee: 25, the maximum damage the dragon can do with dragon fire, is about 70 if you don't wear any anti-dragon fire shield. The dragon can temporarily freeze you, but it is rare of him to do so. As stated above the dragon can poison you and can damage up to 8! Here is a common strategy on how to kill the King Black Dragon.
Upon arrival to the lair, it is wise to drink potions immediately. Drink a dose of each of your potions (If you brought any), and run to the other side of the lair. This is it; the KBD will now start attacking you! The dragon can mage and melee attack you. If you are going in a small group of 3's, you should make a triangle around the KBD, this way, the KBD will have to turn to attack you, and this makes him slower. You can use any of the below Techniques, it's really up to you.

The Loot:
If you managed to kill the KBD, Congratulations! Click here to see what the KBD drops. The KBD 100% drops Dragon Bones and Black Dragonhide. If you wielded a Ring of Wealth, you have a greater chance of getting something rare from the King Black Dragon.
