Magic is one of the most useful and versatile skills in RuneScape, offering both members and free players the ability to do anything from engulfing their enemies in a ball of flames, to turning bones into bananas, and such, it is very important to have a high magic level. Training magic is not easy however, but this guide will show you some of the fastest, cheapest and most fun ways to raise your level to what you want it to be-be it 60 for the Mage Arena, 94 for Ice Barrage or even 99 for the admired magic cape of achievement and skill mastery.
What to wear
Before you even start training your magic, you are going to need a suitable outfit. Some of the more popular mage attire is listed below.
Free to Play
-Low level/Cheap: Monks robes, which can be bought from other players for a small price, or obtained from the Monastery and a Wizards hat which can be gotten as a drop from Wizards.
-Mid level/Price: Druidic mage robes and Combat robes from the minigame Fist of Guthix are the best option for these levels, if you do not play Fist Of Guthix, then use Monks Robes.
-High level/Expensive: Combat and Druidic Mage robes from the minigame Fist of Guthix are still the best option, if you do not play Fist Of Guthix, then use Monks Robes.
Members
-Low level/Cheap: Same as free to play.
-Mid level/Price: Mystic robes, which can be bought from the magic guild or other players provide nice bonuses, whilst not being to expensive.
-High level/Expensive: The Ahrims barrows set is a good option for high leveled mage’s. It can be obtained from the Barrows miningame, or bought from other players.
Obtaining Runes
Now that you have an appropriate mage outfit, you are going to need some Runes to train with. All of the elemental Runes can be crafted using the Runecrafting skill by both members and free players, and all runes except Soul runes may be crafted by members. Runes may also be obtained by buying them from the magic shops in Varrock, Port Sarim and the Mage Arena (members only), or as drops from many monsters.
Training
That’s it, your ready to go; you have your armor, you have your Runes, all you have to do now is go out and train. The guide below explains the best ways to train, and is split into free to play, and members sections, which themselves are also split into fast ways to train and cheap ways to train. Members may also want to read the free to play section, for more training tips.
Free to Play Training
Levels 1-3
Cheap Option: The best way to train at these levels is to kill cows using the Wind Strike. The best place to do this is at the Lumbridge cow fields, as you can stand outside behind the fence, and safely Mage the cows without getting hit at all. You may then pick up the Cowhides, which sell for around 100gp, or 200gp if you tan them into Leather. This method is not just cheap, but will earn you enough money to buy more runes or Mage armor if needed.
Fast option: Due to the small amount of spells available, the fast option is also the cheap option.
levels 3-11
Cheap Option: The best option open to you is using the best Strike spells you can to kill Cows.
Fast Option: The fastest option now is to use the Confuse spell repeatedly. Popular targets for this method of training are the scorpions in the Al-Kharid chasm mine.
Levels 11-19
Cheap Option: The cheapest option open to you is still using strike spells to kill Cows. Even though you can use wind bolt don’t!. Unless you are making your own runes. The reason? Chaos runes are expensive, and offer only a small increase in exp over strike spells.
Fast Option: You should continue with the method explained above, only this time use the Weaken spell.
Levels 19-39
Cheap Option: If you feel confident enough, then you should move onto killing the level 28 Hill Giants. Hill giants have a 100% drop rate of big bones, which can sell for 300gp each. You should use the spell fire strike, as it is extremely cheap, whilst still being extremely effective. The best place to kill Hill Giants is in the Edgeville Dungeon, as it is close to a bank and contains several safe-spots. As your level increases, you may want to move onto the tougher, level 42 Moss Giants. Like Hill Giants, they have a 100% drop rate of big bones, but also drop other valuable things (Even the Dragon Spear on members worlds!).
Fast option: You should continue the method explained with the Weaken spell, only for these levels use Curse.
Levels 39-42
Cheap Option: Your best option at these levels is still killing Moss Giants using fire strike.
Fast Option: The fastest way to train now is using the spell Crumble undead, as it gives amazing amounts of exp per cast. However, the spell only hits on undead targets (zombies, skeletons etc). The best place to do this is in the Varrock sewers, as you can Mage the ghosts and Skeletons from across the water, without getting hit.
Levels 42-55
Cheap Option: The cheapest option is still killing things, Moss and Hill giants are the recommended targets, although you may want to try your hand at Ice Giants in the Ice Cavern if you are feeling brave. Depending on how much money you have, you may also want to start using fire bolt.
Fast Option: From now on, the fastest option available is through the Superheat item spell. What this does is turn ores into bars, and is a good way to train. The method that you should use is to buy some iron, and two times as many coal and turn it into steel bars. Then sell the bars, and buy some more ore. You do however loose money with this method, and you need 30 smithing to use it. If your smithing is below 30, then continue with Crumble Undead.
Levels 55-99
Cheap option: Your magic level should now be high enough to kill level 82 lesser demons easily. Not only do they have an extremely low magic defence, the have some great drops including Rune Med helmets. Even at this level, you should continue to use Fire Strike, or perhaps Fire Bolt if you have the money; as the Rune Med drops (about 1/150), should cover the costs of the Runes used.
Fast Option: The fastest option from now on is High Alchemy, What this does is turns an item into an amount of gold. In free to play however, a lack of good things to alch makes this an extremely expensive method, and is only recommended of you have a lot of GP to spare. The best free to play items to alch are steel plates, as many people use them to train smithing and such they are easy to buy in large numbers.
If you don’t have enough money to spend on alchemy, it is recommended that you continue superheating steel bars until you reach your goal.
Members Training
Levels 1-45
Cheap option: Follow the free to play guide
Fast Option: Follow the free to play guide.
Levels 45-55
Cheap option: Continue killing things, and try superheat item. (The reason that I class this as a fast option in free to play, and a cheap option in members is that members have many more, and better ways of making money, and Nature runes in members may be obtained through the ‘Fast Free Double Nats’ system for free)
Fast Option: Camelot teleport will make these levels fly by! Simply grab some law runes and an air staff and teleport yourself to Camelot over and over again. This method is extremely expensive, but also extremely fast and is most definitely recommended if you have the money.
Levels 55-87
Cheap option: The best way to train from now one is using the Mage training arena, in Al-Kharid. Whilst the exp is fairly slow, you can gain some great rewards to either keep or sell to other players, giving you a nice profit and the ability to buy more runes and repeat the process. You may also want to try fire striking some lesser demons, and even if you don’t have that much money, you should try high alchemy. (You loose money, buy only around 110k per 1k alchs, and the fast exp make up for it).
Fast Option: By far the best way to train at these levels is using the spell High Alchemy. This will get you around 60k exp per hour, but is fairly expensive. The best item to alch is Yew Longbows, as you only loose around 110gp per alch.
Notes
-Once you reach level 60, you may want to try getting a God Cape and Staff, as well as the ability to cast God Spells from the Mage Arena in the Wilderness. Careful though!
-Once you reach level 66, you will be able to enter the Wizards Guild, in Yanille.
Levels 87-99
Cheap option: You should continue using the Mage Training Arena, as well as doing some alching and killing monsters.
Fast Option: Level 6 enchant now becomes the fastest experience. Grab a lava staff and head down to the Mage Training Arena, and cast it on the shapes in the Enchantment Chamber. These will then turn into orbs, which you can deposit in the center of the room. If you want fast exp, then ignore the bonus shape, and just pick up an inventory of shapes, enchant them and deposit them. This method can give you up to 80k exp per hour.
This is however expensive, so you may want to continue alching.
The Magic Skill-Cape (members only)
The Magic Skill Cape may be bought from the Robe seller in the Magic guild for 99,000 coins, and comes with a matching hood.
For more information, visit the Skill Capes guide
Other Training Methods
Barrows (members only) Once your magic and defence levels are both around level 70, you may want to try your hand at the Barrows miningame. For information on how to complete the barrows, take a look at the Barrows Minigame Guide
Castle Wars and Pest Control (members only) Both of these minigames can provide decent magic exp whilst having some fun. They are not the best way to train, but can provide a welcome break for when you get bored with regular training methods. For more information, visit the Castle Wars and Pest control guides
Mage Training Arena (members only) The Mage Training Arena can be found next to the Duel Arena, in Al-Kharid, The exp that you can gain here is good, but the rewards are excellent. You gain points by playing 4 minigames, which can then be exchanged for magical equipment. This can be kept for your own use, or sold so you may make a profit, buy back the runes and repeat.
It is recommended that you talk to the various guardians on how to play the minigames.
Fist Of Guthix The exp gained at Fist Of Guthix is extremely low; but it does have 3 good points…
-Its Fun
-The Runes are provided for free so you get free mage exp
-You can get some great rewards such as new Mage robes.
To begin, you must travel to the Wilderness, and it is recommended that you talk to Fiara, the guardian, for information on how to play.
How to Stay Focused
-Take breaks from training every once in a while, and have a few games of Castle Wars, Pest Control or Fist of Guthix; you will still be getting exp whilst having fun.
-Press: Shift, Alt, NUMLOCK to turn on mousekeys when alching. It allows you to use the number ‘5′ on your keyboard instead of clicking, which helps prevent strain in your arm.
-Complete quests that give mage exp or additions such as Underground Pass (members only), Family Crest (members only), and Witch’s Potion, so that you can help your magic whilst having fun.
