Runescape Other Guide

Have you ever tried to defeat a low levelled mage in Castle Wars using melee; only to discover that you have been defeated before you could even reach your target?

How about being turned into a human pin cushion when trying to attack a ranger, when using your superior magic skills in Bounty Hunter?

I'm sure that this has happened to us all at one time or another; but why does this happen? Surely your superior levels should mean that you will win these fights easily? The answer; the combat triangle. But what is the combat triangle? Can I defeat it? Read on to find out.

The Combat Triangle

What is the Combat Triangle?

There are three different styles of combat in the realm of RuneScape, they are;

-Warriors

-Rangers

-Mages

And each one is strong against one class, and weaker against another- no one style is superior. This is called the combat triangle, and the pictures above illustrated this.

If you're combat stats are fairly close together, then generally;

-Warriors defeat Rangers

-Rangers defeat Mages

-Mages defeat Warriors

Why does it work like this?

Warriors defeat Rangers

Generally, a warrior will defeat a ranger. This is because Warrior's tend to wear metal plate armour, which has a high range defence bonus- as an Archers arrows will just bounce off. A Ranger's leather armour however, will have a hard time coping with a Warrior's physical attacks, and such strong damage can be dealt.

Rangers defeat Mages

Whilst a Ranger's leather and dragon hide armour may be weak against Melee attacks, it has an extremely high defence against magic, and such an attacking Mage will have trouble hitting his target. A Ranger's arrows on the other-hand will have no trouble penetrating a Mages magic robes, which give little or no defence against range.

Mages Defeat Warriors

Whilst a Mage may look like an easy target for a warrior, with his armour consisting of only robes, it is in fact the opposite that is true. Whilst there armour may be weak, mages are a dangerous foe- with a combination of holding spells, curses and dangerous missile attacks meaning that an unprepared Warrior could find himself defeated before he even reached his target.

Bending the combat triangle.

All hope is not lost however. With a little bit of preparation and know how, it is possible to bend the combat triangle.

Warrior Defeating a Mage

If you have any dragon hide armour or robes, then put them on; if not, then just take off what armour you have- this will keep your range defence as high as possible.

You should also activate the prayer, protect from mage, or if you prayer level is not high enough, then you should try any other of the magic boosting prayers. This will increased your magic defence, and make the mage hit less.

If you have any potions, then drink them- then attack. You should try and get the first hits in, and inflict some damage before the mage can start casting binding spells. If he is not casting binding spells, then great- your weapon should have no trouble in slashing through his robes, if not then just try and stay alive, one of his binds will splash eventually, allowing you attack.

Tips

-Slashing weapons are great against robes. Some good slashing weapons include scimitars, and for members abyssal whips.

-Charge the Mage to try and get the first hits, before he can start binding you.

Mage defeating a Ranger

If you have some metal armour then put it on (don't put on a set, one or two pieces are best as this don’t affect your magic bonus too much. Things such as med helms, chain bodies, square shields and platelets are best.) Members may want to use split bark armour if they can, as it gives good melee and range defence bonuses.

Now that you have got your armour sorted then you will want to put on either protect from range, or any defence boosting spell, and magic boosting spell if you wish.

Your curse and binding spells will have no effect against these opponents, so don't waste time and concentrate on attacking. Set your best missile spell to auto cast and attack. Eat when needed, and hope for the best.

Tips

-Don't bother with curses and binds- they will have no effect on an archer.

-Split Bark armour has high melee and range defence bonuses, at the cost of mage defence and attack.

-Med helms, chain bodies and square shields will allow you a higher range defence, without costing your mage bonuses too dearly.

Ranger defeating a Warrior

As with the mage, if you have some metal armour then put it on, and if possible, use protect from melee and defence boosting prayers if possible.

Your only advantage against a warrior is that you can hit him first from a distance. If you are a member, then unleash your special attack, and inflict some high damage before the Warrior even reaches you. You should also try use obstacles to your advantage.

Tips

-Be the first to attack; and use your special attack if you are a member.

-Use obstacles to your advantage.

-Use the best arrows you can afford if you are in Bounty Hunter, to increase your chance of getting a kill, or if in Fist Of Guthix, as you will get them back after a game. If not, then use cheaper alternatives such as steel.

-It may be useful to carry both a short bow and a long bow. Whilst longbows are slower, they hit harder and longer- useful if your target is running away. Short bows are best for close quarters combat.

Hybrids

Another way of bending the combat triangle, is occupying more than one point of it, meaning that you won't be at a disadvantage. Players who do this are commonly called hybrids, and usually have a great advantage in PvP minigames such as bounty hunter and castle wars, however they do have some disadvantages;

Advantages

-Hybrids can occupy more than one corner of the combat triangle, meaning that they will never be at a disadvantage.

-Hybrids can take down opponents much more effectively than single class players.

Disadvantages

-Hybrids have to carry more armour and weapons, meaning less room for food and potions, and more weight- so thy cannot run for as long.

Some examples of common Hybrids are listed below:

Ranger/WarriorThese have become popular with the addition of Bounty Hunter. A player will attack initially with Range, sometimes using a special attack, before making a final high hit to finish a player off with a Rune 2 handed sword or similar weapon.

However, most players in Bounty Hunter will be using plate armour, so it may be hard to hit.

Ranger/Mage These are also popular. The combination of being able to bind with Mage, and hit high with Range usually makes Range and Mage a deadly combination.

Mage/Warrior These are not every popular, due to the fact that plate armour- a warriors attire of choice makes spell casting hard so you will hit less. Some players however like being able to bind their opponents, and use the spell Bounty Locate in Bounty Hunter.

Range/Mage/Warrior
Many players have well rounded stats, however it is not recommended that you use all three at once. Whilst you will be able to occupy all three corners of the combat triangle, and not be at a disadvantage at any time, carrying all the armour and weapons required means that you will not be able to carry very much food, or potions.

Outfits

It can sometimes be extremely useful to wear armour that protects you from several types of attack at one. This is especially so in multi combat areas, were you may be attacked by more than one style. Some examples are listed below.
